My job is not ideal.
Before I was laid off at the end of June, I had intended on staying with it through the recession. Hey, it's a job, right? It pays! It has benefits!
And then I was laid off.
I puttered around for 2 months before I realized unemployment benefits weren't working, so I applied to the Apple Store. Which was the original plan.
Almost got it too. But at the meet-and-greet, my presenting wasn't exactly up-to-snuff, and I didn't get the job.
And the old job called. Want some temporary work? Yeah I guess.
And now it's a game of "When's he gonna get laid off again?" Everyone in the warehouse thinks I need to be kept around, that the workload is too much not to. And hey, it's a job!
Temporary means no paid time off, or holiday pay, or benefits, but there's lots and lots of overtime.
I decided not to stress about the imminent doom of my employment. It was giving me panic attacks.
Meanwhile, I consider what else I can do. I'm going to reapply to the Apple Store for a different position. The first time I applied for a Specialist. The on-the-floor sales people. I've been a Mac since the mid 90s (System 7 baby!), so I know ALOT about Apple products, and have even converted 3 of my friends.
I didn't get the job, but I was in the top 6, so that's gotta say something. I figure if I apply for a Stock position, they'll want more than anything to have me.
It's not like all 3 of my jobs to date have involved stock:
*Library Page: I put the books back on the shelves in the proper order
*Marc's Produce stocker: I took pallets of boxes of food off the trucks, put the boxes in the cooler, and restocked the department displays. I also was in charge of ordering for the organic department
*Warehouse worker: I unload and load up trucks, and pulled stuff to send.
So I think I have a good chance.
It would truly be justice to be able to quit the warehouse job. It's not like we're treated well.
